Form of Government

The City Charter established the Council-Manager form of government for McAlester. The Mayor and Six council members are elected by the citizens of McAlester. The City Manager is appointed by the City Council and is the Chief administrative officer of the City. |

| City Council Meetings | ||

The McAlester City Council meets regularly on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 6:00p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 28 E. Washington. The open meetings act requires the agenda to be posted 24 business hours before the meeting. Official action can be taken only on items which appear on the agenda. A quorum of four Council Members is required to transact City business. |

| The Mayor presides over Council meetings and votes on all City Council business. The Mayor serves a two-year term of office. The Mayor is elected at large. | ||
| The Mayor and Council Members enact City Ordinances, set City policy and authorize all expenditures of City Funds. | ||
| The offices are part-time positions, although elected officials devote much of their time to City Business. The Mayor is paid $75.00 per month and City Council Members are paid $50.00 per month. | ||

The city is divided into 6 geographical areas called wards. Each Council Member represents one ward. Council Members serve a two-year term of office. They are elected by the voters in each respective ward. |
