Recycle Center dumpers to be prosecuted
Enforcement of McAlester anti-dumping and littering ordinances is being increased up at the recycling center.
The city’s Recycle Center, at Main Street and Choctaw Avenue, accepts recyclable plastic bottles, aluminum cans and foil, paper and cardboard. Abuse of the site, particularly on weekends and other non-staffed hours, has required additional enforcement of dumping and littering laws..
Dumping of household garbage, tires, furniture and other non-recyclable items is illegal and violators will be prosecuted.
The Recycle Center is owned and operated by the city, and staffing is contracted to the KiBois Community Action Foundation. KiBois pays disabled clients to work at the Recycle Center under supervision to help them learn life skills.
Aggressive ticketing by McAlester police, camera surveillance and additional city staffing are among efforts to address the problem. The surveillance cameras will be directly linked to police dispatchers at nearby City Hall who can immediately send police to the location.
