ODOT highway project getting underway

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation notified the City of McAlester that contractors will close the Fourteenth Street intersection to through traffic on April 23, 2024 as a construction project on US Highway 69 (George Nigh Expressway) gets underway.

The mill-and-resurface project extends through the intersections at Fourteenth Street and Ninth Street (Hardy Springs Road) and is expected to cause some delays throughout the duration of the 120 days allotted for contractors to complete construction.

Crews will start by closing the Fourteenth Street intersection to traffic crossing over the highway for 14-21 days, weather permitting. Southbound traffic will be able to turn right at the light, while northbound traffic will also only be able to turn right at the light. Contractors will ensure the Fourteenth Street intersection is complete and functional before starting construction at the Ninth Street intersection. Signs will reroute traffic as needed throughout the project.

Traffic going north and south will be reduced to one lane on each side of the highway during construction on the intersections.

Officials advise commuters to plan their routes accordingly, anticipate delays, and exercise caution when navigating through the construction zone.
