The City of McAlester Wastewater branch provides Wastewater services to the citizens of McAlester. The Wastewater Branch has two treatment facilities in McAlester. The Wastewater Treatment Facility is located west of town on Hwy 31 and services residents and businesses that are located south of Carl Albert Pkwy. The East Wastewater Treatment Facility is located northeast of town on Hereford Lane and services residents and businesses located north of Carl Albert Pkwy and businesses along Highway 69.  

Both of the Wastewater Treatment Plants are under the direction of Wayne Russell, Wastewater Superintendent. 

Mr. Russell has been employed for The City of McAlester for 16 years. Mr. Russell started as a Plant Operator in 1993, three years later he was moved up to Lab Tech and then shortly after was promoted to Chief Plant Operator at the West Wastewater Plant. Mr. Russell served as Chief Plant Operator for 9 years before being promoted in June of 2009 to Wastewater Superintendant. Mr. Russell has a B Wastewater Operator License and a B Wastewater Lab License through the State of Oklahoma, he also has an Associates Degree in Electronics from Oklahoma State Tech.

 In 2008 the West Wastewater Plant, while Mr. Russell was Chief Plant Operator and over saw daily routine and operations at the plant, was honored with an award naming the plant, Wastewater Plant of the Year. The award, given by the Oklahoma Water and Pollution Control Association of Woodward, recognized the McAlester facility as the best in the state among plants serving cities with populations between 10,000 and 50,000 residents. 

Wastewater facilities operators and maintenance are in charge of protecting health and the environment by providing wastewater service through treatment of wastewater generated by residential, commercial and industrial customers. The Wastewater facilities operate and maintain 12 wastewater lift stations and 1 storm water lift station. Each wastewater plant treats an estimated 2 million gallons of water a day. The City of McAlester Wastewater Plants employs a Wastewater Superintendant, 2 Chief Plant Operator’s, 2 Asst. Lab Tech’s, 7 Plant Operator’s and 1 Plant Mechanic along with 1 Asst. Plant Mechanic. Wastewater plant employees are all licensed by the State of Oklahoma.

 This system is closely managed and monitored to meet all federal and state regulatory requirements and most important provide 24-hour per day wastewater service to our customer.
