ODOT project on U.S. Highway 69 to start April 12

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation notified the City of McAlester that a construction project on US Highway 69 (George Nigh Expressway) will start Friday, April 12, 2024, and impact traffic.

Officials delayed the original start of the project until after the eclipse to minimize traffic hazards during construction of the project that will extend through the intersections at Fourteenth Street and South Ninth Street (Hardy Springs Road).

The mill-and-resurface project is expected to cause some delays as traffic will be diverted throughout the duration of the 120 days allotted for contractors to complete construction.

Signage is being placed to notify drivers of traffic changes and plans are subject to change. Initial plans call for crews to start the project on the northbound lanes and finish work on that side before transitioning to the southbound lanes.

Traffic going north and south will be reduced to one lane on the southbound portion of the highway until crews complete repairs on the northbound side. Traffic will again be reduced to one lane all on the northbound lanes while crews work to complete the southbound portion of the highway.

This project aims to enhance the infrastructure and safety of US Highway 69, contributing to improved travel experiences for motorists in the area. Officials advise commuters to plan their routes accordingly, anticipate delays, and exercise caution when navigating through the construction zone.
