The Water Treatment Plant is under the director of the Utilities Department Director Nick Manning. McAlester operates a 12 million-gallon per day water treatment plant to provide drinking water to the City of McAlester and five rural water districts (approximately 28,000 people and the majority of Pittsburg County). The reliant Rural Water Districts include 5, 6, 7, 9, & 16. 

The plant is a conventional, coagulation / clarification / filtration water treatment plant and is operated 24 hours per day, seven days a week and was put into operation in 1982.

Current water treatment plant average daily usage is 4.5 million gallons a day and the current water treatment plant maximum daily usage is 8.3 million gallons per day.
