What’s in your water?  Find out by attending a training that will put McAlester area “citizen scientists” to work monitoring local streams.  The State of Oklahoma’s “Blue Thumb water quality education program” will train citizens on Saturday and Sunday, November 7 & 8, at the Expo Center.

Participants will learn about watersheds, common pollutants, collecting data on streams, and educating the public about pollution prevention and sustainable landuses.  Ages that participate are from middle school through retirement.  Teachers who attend can request an abbreviated  training session for their students.

Blue Thumb volunteer coordinator Cheryl Cheadle said “People who enjoy the outdoors and want to help protect local waterways should attend the training.  All kinds of people volunteer with Blue Thumb, and the McAlester area is big enough that we expect a lot of people to get involved.”  Cheadle assured that numbers will be small enough so that safety during Covid time is observed.

The City of McAlester is hosting the training, and  more information is available from Oliver Skimbo, stormwater manager, at 918-916-4397.
