The McAlester Fire Department has been serving the citizens of McAlester for over 100 years. Beginning in 1905 with a horse-drawn pumper, the fire department has evolved into a full time professional organization that not only provides fire service, but emergency medical services as well.

Personnel
The McAlester Fire Department currently has 42 full-time employees. There are 39 Firefighters/EMT's assigned to one of three shifts to provide continuous emergency service to the community.

The department’s administrative staff consists of the fire chief, assistant fire chief, fire marshal, and an administrative assistant:

Mission Statement
The mission of the McAlester Fire Department shall be to prevent fires from starting, to prevent loss of life and property once started, to confine a fire to the place where it started, to extinguish fires and to investigate the cause of all fires. In regard to emergency medical services, the Fire Department shall provide the highest quality of emergency medical services possible, in the care of sick and / or injured in transporting same to hospital facilities.
