Why Your Next Trip Should Be To Downtown McAlester

Downtown McAlester has had an entrepreneurial revolution. In the past couple of years, entrepreneurs have opened unique shops and restaurants, completely transforming historic downtown areas into incredibly vibrant places. It’s a must-visit on anyone’s list. Kristen Lloyd, owner of Common Roots in Historic Downtown McAlester explains, “We have an amazing Historic Downtown that makes shopping an experience. You don't get that everywhere. We have beautiful historic buildings that house fun unique stores and restaurants.”

“McAlester really takes pride in their local businesses and people always support us,” said Kristen Lloyd, owner of Common Roots in Historic Downtown McAlester. “We support local businesses as well. There's no better feeling than working together to create a vibrant McAlester.” And that’s exactly what local business owners have done - create a vibrant atmosphere that’s attracting visitors and drawing in new residents.

If you haven’t been to Downtown McAlester lately, now is the time to visit and meet some of the people who have modernized the downtown area. In addition to running their store, the Lloyd’s are involved in McAlester and regularly participate in civic projects. “We spearheaded the new streetscape downtown and helped to get the area rezoned Commercial/Residential so building owners could rent out or live in their buildings,” she said. Her motivations are McAlester-driven. “I love to see positive changes in our community. I think everyone has that something that drives them and for us, we have a love for restoring things and helping others,” said Lloyd.

Kristen Lloyd encourages everyone to put a visit to Downtown McAlester at the top of their list. “Our downtown has grown so much in the past few years. We have some of the most amazing stores and restaurants. Each store is so unique and fun. It's the perfect place to come grab some lunch and then do a little shopping. Even if you just want to window shop it's so nice to walk our beautiful downtown and take in all the history and beauty of the area. Not to mention that you’re supporting someone’s dream and family.”

For Kristen, the spirit of McAlester is truly one of coming together to create something special. “I've seen over and over again that when someone is in need our community comes together to help each other out. It's really amazing all the organizations we have in this town that help those in need… Shared Blessings, Hope House, Good Samaritans, J Michael Miller giveaways, Relay for Life, and so many more. We are one of the most giving and caring communities,” she said.
