Details for Keep McAlester Beautiful's 2023 Fall Cleanup

Keep McAlester Beautiful Executive Director Megan Waters details the 2023 Fall Cleanup.

1. When does Keep McAlester Beautiful’s Fall Cleanup for 2023 begin?
It's the first and second weekend of October. It starts Oct. 7-8,  and continues the following weekend, Oct. 14-15. Materials will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on those Saturdays and from noon until 3 p.m. on those Sundays.

2. What materials are being accepted for this year's Fall Cleanup?
We're collecting trash, electronic gear, metal, tires and brush. Latex paint is not toxic so we're accepting it too. You can also let it dry out and put it in the regular trash.

3. What will not be accepted at this year’s Fall Cleanup?
We're not doing prescription drugs. We're not doing shredding. We're not doing hazardous materials. If you have oil-based paint or aerosol paint, save it for next April when we're collecting hazardous materials.

4. Where should materials be taken for disposal during the Fall Cleanup?
Take trash, electronics, tires and metal to the McAlester Recycling Center in the former National Guard building at 301 E. Polk Ave.

5. Is there a route for people dropping off items?
We sometimes have long lines of people unloading their materials so we ask everyone to come down Sixth Street, then west on East Polk Avenue.

6. Will electronics be taken at KMB’s Fall Cleanup?
Yes. Electronics go inside the armory and everything else goes inside the gate. By electronics we mean anything that runs on a battery or plugs in. We take them all.

7. Will brush be accepted?
Yes — but brush must be taken to the McAlester Municipal Landfill, off U.S. Highway 270 West (at 2910 Mitchell Road). It will be open for brush the same hours that we are.

8. Are volunteers needed to help KMB with the Fall Cleanup?
We always need volunteers. Just show up at the armory so we can sign you up and get you outfitted with gloves and a safety vest. Anyone needing community service hours can just let me know and I can sign for that too.

9.  Do you have any advice for people bringing stuff to dump at the Fall Cleanup?
Always bring help to unload your items. Sometimes we see a bunch of people help to put stuff on a trailer, but then just one shows up to drop it all off. It happens, but we might not have enough volunteers to unload it so make sure to bring help.

10. How else can people help Keep McAlester Beautiful?
KMB offers several ways for citizens to keep our community beautiful. There’s always volunteering at our community service events throughout the year, we have board meetings, and tons of ways to get involved. We will also take donations at the gate during the Fall Cleanup, but they are not required.
We want to do everything we can to ensure our community has a bright and clean future ahead so come join the fun!
