Howell named state's Code Compliance Officer of the Year

Tabetha Howell, of the City of McAlester’s Community Development Department, made history after being named the 2023 Oklahoma Code Enforcement Association Code Compliance Officer of the Year.

The code enforcement/abatement officer became the first City of McAlester employee to receive the recognition when she accepted the award at the OCEA’s annual spring conference Feb. 29, 2024.

“Tabetha is an incredible person who pours her heart into helping our community,” Community Development Director Jayme Clifton said. “She’s a valuable member of our team and I’m excited for her to be recognized for her unwavering commitment to work with people to make our city a better place.”

Howell started with the City of McAlester six years ago and takes a proactive approach to issues in the community to help improve the city’s overall health, quality of life and economic development goals. Her ability to partner with community organizations, to facilitate solutions between violators and available resources, to educate the public, and to plan with other departments and organizations impacts positive change.

She identifies and addresses public nuisance violations, educates the public on the importance of code compliance, and helps keep our community clean. Howell creates informational materials, builds working relationships with individuals, organizations and agencies to address issues, and develops straight-forward solutions with area waste disposal services.

“Tabetha embodies the teamwork and exceptional service that we make our mission at the City of McAlester,” City Manager Dave Andren said. “Her dedication and approach to code compliance has made a significant impact on our community and we congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition.”

Howell also helps her community outside of work as board vice president and long-time member of Keep McAlester Beautiful, which focuses on beautification in the city through painting, plantings, waste removal and more.
