Details for Keep McAlester Beautiful's 2024 Spring Cleanup

Keep McAlester Beautiful Executive Director Megan Waters details the 2024 Spring Cleanup.

When and where is this year’s spring cleanup?

We will again be at the McAlester Recycling Center at 301 E. Polk Ave. in McAlester on the corner of North Third Street and East Polk Avenue all four weekends in April for the KMB Spring Cleanup. Times will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, and from noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

What materials will be accepted at this year’s Spring Cleanup?
McAlester residents can bring your bulk trash, metal, tires, electronics, and any other non-toxic items you need gone. Latex paint is not toxic so we’re accepting that too. It’s not open to commercial businesses. Paper shredding will also be available on the final Sunday in April.

Will electronics be taken at KMB’s Spring Cleanup?
Yes. Electronics go inside the armory and everything else goes inside the gate.

Will brush be accepted?
Yes — but brush must be taken to the McAlester Municipal Landfill, off U.S. Highway 270 West (at 2910 Mitchell Road). It will be open for brush the same hours that we are.

Will hazardous materials be accepted?
We're only collecting hazardous materials on the last Saturday in April. Hazardous waste is all of those scary jugs and bottles of stuff on a shelf in the garage or stashed under the sink. It’s chemicals such as cleaners, automotive fluids, yard care products, pesticides, oil-based paints, etc.

Is there a route for people dropping off items?
Lines for unloading materials sometimes get backed up so we ask everyone to come down Sixth Street, then west on East Polk Avenue.

Are volunteers needed to help KMB with the Fall Cleanup?
We always need volunteers. Just show up at the armory so we can sign you up and get you outfitted with gloves and a safety vest. Anyone needing community service hours can just let me know and I can sign for that too.

What advice do you have for us bringing stuff to dump?
Always bring help to unload your items. Sometimes we see a bunch of people help to put stuff on a trailer, but then just one shows up to drop it all off. It happens, but we might not have enough volunteers to unload it so make sure to bring help.

How is all this made possible?
The cleanup is supported in so many ways to help citizens like you get the burden of waste out of their homes, garages, and yards. We also partner with Republic Services, the City of McAlester, Pittsburg County Drug Court, Oklahoma Tire Recyclers, Yaffe Scrap Metal, CSI,  and Natural Evolution, Environmental Management and more to make it all happen.

How else can people help Keep McAlester Beautiful?
KMB offers several ways for citizens to keep our community beautiful. There’s always volunteering at our community service events throughout the year, we have board meetings, and tons of ways to get involved. We also accept donations at the gate, but they’re not required. We want to do everything we can to ensure our community has a bright and clean future ahead so come join the fun!
